The table: showing a gulf between seventh and eighth.
This is a big game for both clubs. It’s a battle of seventh v eighth but they are fighting on different fronts. Villa, licking their wounds after exiting the Champions League and FA Cup, want to get back into the top five. Manchester City’s win last night left Chelsea to be shot at. They’re in fifth. Fulham can grab one of those places left spare by other teams’ successes – United and Spurs in the Europa League, Arsenal in the Champions League, City in the FA Cup? – but only if they stop being so inconsistent. They’re going to have to play better than they did in beating Southampton last week.
