Despite public pre-match assurances from Xabi Alonso that the Argentina midfielder would be included, Fernández was not selected, prompting further speculation that a move to Manchester City is imminent. Chelsea are reported to be holding out for £120m for the 25-year-old, while City are also believed to be interested in securing the services of Iliman Ndiaye, whom Everton value at £80m.

While Mikel Arteta insists he is “really happy” with the squad Arsenal have, talk persists that he’d be even happier if Julián Alvarez was part of it. A pariah among Atlético Madrid fans after stating he wants to leave their club, the Argentina forward wants a “dream” move to Barcelona.
