“Obviously, it’s not something that I wanted,” Angel Gomes said in 2022, reflecting on the daunting “wonderkid” title that, five years after becoming the youngest player to feature for Manchester United since 1953, he had thus far failed to live up to.
Gomes, the first player born in the 2000s to feature in the Premier League, was thrust into the spotlight when he made his debut, coming off the bench in an otherwise unmemorable and inconsequential 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace in May 2017.
